The 2024/2025 Washington Commanders season will stick with most us as the greatest season in the franchise’s history that did not finish with one of their three Super Bowl wins. To make it to within one game of the Super Bowl in this season was nothing short of miraculous. What owner Josh Harris built with his philosophies of: Culture-People-Talent is nothing short of incredible. Actually all of his businesses and sports teams have been built this same philosophy, but certainly the results will vary.
In the HBSE sports empire, the Commanders are the crown jewel. The decisions on-and-off the field have scored big. From hiring team president Mark Clouse to team GM Adam Peters to head coach Dan Quinn to quarterback Jayden Daniels to lesser known employees like Ops assistant Cyrus Daniels who was promoted from his position as an intern. It takes a village, and building a winning culture with talented people is a key. Computers and analytics can only do so much — this is a game played by humans, even though the Commanders’ quarterback seemed like a cyborg at times.
There is Chief People Officer for the Washington Commanders. Andre Chambers serves in that role as a member of the executive leadership team. Chambers is tasked with reimagining the structure, people strategy and human resources function as Washington continues its path toward becoming a modern franchise.
This team was fun to watch with Hail Mary wins, walk-off winners, a last second field goal, and two playoff wins to make it to the NFC Championship game. Daniels will almost certainly be voted as the league’s offensive Rookie of the Year, and Quinn is a finalist for Coach of the Year.
Many evaluators view this season as a turning point for the franchise, generating a strong sense of optimism for the future. According to Overthecap.com, the Commanders rank third in most cap space for 2025 ($87.6 million) behind only the Patriots and Raiders. Expect that Washington has a chance to be a top destination for free agents. However, some of their best performers are set to be free agents unless they are extended or re-signed.
Here is a partial list of notable free agents:
- 1. LB Bobby Wagner
- 2. TE Zach Ertz
- 3. Safety Jeremy Chinn
- 4. DE Dante Fowler Jr.
- 5. WR Noah Brown
- 6. WR Olamide Zaccheaus
- 7. WR Jamison Crowder
- 8. QB Marcus Mariota
- 9. DE Clelin Ferrell
- 10. T Cornelius Lucas
- 11. K Zane Gonzalez
Name the players you want back and keep in mind, every re-signed free agent will eat into that cap space pool of approximately $87.6 million. Over at Spotrac, they have a running tally on the team’s salaries and cap hits.
Of interest, Marshon Lattimore is the team’s fourth highest paid player at $18 million for the 2025/2026 season. He could be retained for next season or released, or possibly have his contract renegotiated, but if you believe in what Peters said specifically about Lattimore today — he will be back.
“He was injured when he got here. Anytime you come to a new team and you’re injured, it’s really hard to integrate. Plus you’re coming in at the end of the season, so at the same time you’re rehabbing, you’re learning a new defense, trying to meet new teammates.”
— Peters said about Lattimore
“It was a tough situation for him to come in. What was cool was we saw him get better, we saw him get more acclimated not only to the defense but to his teammates. Really excited for him to have an offseason with us and really learn the defense from the ground up and really have that full runway of training camp and leading into the season. Looking forward to that.”
Expect Peters and his front office will be back to work ASAP and continue building on greatness.
